Paper Games: Aircraft

Idea

The client has set the following task – to create a casual arcade game, based on an existing child’s play “Paperplanes”, which most of us used to play in childhood. To reestablish that forgotten feeling, when you folded paper gently to create your own combat plane, competing with friends and trying to achieve “ace pilot” rank.

Why and how we have decided to make it

Because we are nostalgic for these good old days. Seriously though, the idea is just brilliant. We’ve decided to make it with Unity. Game play has one playfield, two players who are trying to destroy each other’s aircraft by ramming them.

The game has the following distinctive features:

  • User can play with friend, using one phone
  • Turn-based battle system
  • Exclusive paper-style design

Proposals on development stage include appearance modifications, multiplayer, buying and upgrading planes process

Challenge

First of all, we needed to make the code flexible for constant changes and additions. Some other problems included monobehaviour singleton, pen animation, in-game purchases.

For example, there were two different ways to prevent pen animation problem.

Scroll view problem. In a standard Unity environment, there is only a simple swipe. User can’t swipe from first to the seventh element as an example. Our devs decided to rewrite the layout components and add scrolling animation logic.
